Linus made a rare mistake in Road America qualifying that cost him a shot at a sixth consecutive Indy Lights pole position, leaving him in the midfield for Sunday’s race…
After setting the pace on the first runs, Linus looked on course to once again challenge for pole as the second new-tyre attempts began.
However, an off at Turn 13 on what was set to be his fastest lap so far proved costly, ruining the following tour as well as the #26 HMD Motorsports car bounced across the grass outside the timing line.
As a consequence, Linus had to make do with P6 as Andretti Autosport clinched a 1-2-3-4, with HMD team-mate Danial Frost just ahead in P5.
LINUS: “Ah, that’s a shame. It was looking all OK after the first runs, but then I just pushed a little bit too hard in Turn 13 and understeered off the track. It was an unfortunate place for it to happen, right at the timing line, because it cost me both that lap and the next one.
“It’s a shame, because we had at least a 54.0s in the bag and I think we could have absolutely been on pole.
“There’s never a good time for mistakes, but I think this is pretty much my first all year, and at least I’d much rather start sixth here than in Detroit. It’s definitely possible to overtake around this place and we know that we’ve got the pace, so hopefully we can move forward tomorrow and still challenge for the win.”
The race – which will mark the halfway point of the 2022 season – goes green at 9:35 am / 16.35 on Sunday.
