- Victorious British F3 formula reunited
- Swede to race on all European F1 tracks except Monaco
- Street race debut to come in prestigious Grand Prix de Pau
Reigning BRDC British Formula 3 champion Linus Lundqvist will remain with Double R Racing for a move into the F3-based Euroformula Open series in 2019.
19-year-old Lundqvist recently explored the Euroformula Open concept during the championship’s mini winter series at Paul Ricard (France), winning one of the two races in the process.
The Swede has now completed a deal that will see him race in the main series this season, extending his collaboration with UK-based team Double R Racing which he has represented in British F4 and F3 respectively in the last two years. Lundqvist will partner Red Bull Junior Jack Doohan, the son of former world road racing champion Mick Doohan, in Double R Racing’s Euroformula Open assault.
“I’m really excited to have this programme in place and to continue working with Double R for another year,” says Linus Lundqvist. “We have formed a strong relationship over the last two years and managed to pull off a successful title bid last season, and I head into this new challenge determined to keep up that momentum.
“It will be my first season of racing on the tracks of continental Europe, but my clear aim is to fight for another championship. I would like to thank Double R for keeping me on and my backers for their continued support. Let’s bring home some more silverware!”
Apart from an attractive nine-round, 18-race calendar – which incorporates all European Formula 1 Grand Prix tracks except Monaco – Euroformula Open also boasts the universally praised Dallara F317 chassis and open competition between engine manufacturers. Lundqvist’s Double R Racing machine will be powered by an HWA engine.
“Everyone at the team is ecstatic that Linus will be a Double R driver again this year,” says team principal Anthony “Boyo” Hieatt. “We’ve achieved so much together over the past couple of seasons, culminating in winning British F3 last year, so it’s going to be great to continue that partnership together into Euroformula Open. He’s a fantastic driver, bags of commitment and ability, and I’ve got every confidence he will be one of the true frontrunners from the first round.”
The opening meeting of the Euroformula Open season takes place at the aforementioned Paul Ricard circuit on 27-28 April, with the campaign coming to a close at Italy’s famed “Temple of Speed”, Autodromo Nazionale Monza, in October. The calendar also includes the esteemed Grand Prix de Pau street race in northern France, in which Linus Lundqvist will get his first-ever taste of city-centre racing.
