- Swede wins from pole at first time of asking
- Global Racing Group rookie tops practice, qualifying and race charts
- Race 2 pole sets up potential Sunday repeat
Linus Lundqvist sealed an emphatic lights-to-flag victory on his debut in Formula Regional Americas, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process as he snatches an early championship lead.
Starting from pole after establishing a new series lap record in qualifying, the Swedish newcomer led every lap of Saturday’s season-opening race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, surviving a late safety car intervention to eventually win by 3.4 seconds from Indy Lights convert David Malukas.
“That was pretty much a perfect race,” says Linus Lundqvist. “My team delivered a fast car that gave me a lot of confidence throughout the race, so thanks to all the guys at Global Racing Group for that. I was a little bit worried for the start since I’ve had basically no practice in this car, but it worked out well and I didn’t need to defend heading into Turn 1 or the Keyhole.
“From there, it was all about putting my head down. I pushed quite hard on the first ten laps to try and open up a gap, and I think I managed to pull away by something like a second per lap initially, so I was happy about that.”
In setting comfortably the fastest lap of the race aboard his Global Racing Group car, edging the opposition by nearly half a second, Lundqvist will also start tomorrow’s Race 2 from another pole position.
“All in all, a great day, and I really want to thank my team once again for giving me the chance to come here this season. I can’t wait for the second race tomorrow and trying to repeat this.”
Race 2, which will conclude the season-opening round of FR Americas, is scheduled to take place at 12.05 pm local time (US Eastern) / 18.05 CEST on Sunday. Live streaming and timing links are available from www.linuslundqvistracing.se.
