Lundqvist bagged the title early in Saturday’s opening race at the Laguna Seca season-finale, and backed it up with a P4 finish in Sunday’s concluding event – where the HMD Motorsports Swede was the only driver capable of taking the fight to the pace-setting Andretti Autosport cars.
Lundqvist thus sums up a gold-clad campaign packed with success. In 14 races this season, Lundqvist has won five, scored nine podiums, and grabbed seven pole positions; leading the stats charts on all fronts.
“It’s been an absolutely magical season,” says Linus Lundqvist. “Sure, it would have been fun to end it with a podium, but I’m still very proud of what we did here today. I will never forget this season and it means more to me than words can describe. It’s the biggest moment of my life.”
Lundqvist’s title triumph not only makes him the first Swede to seal the Indy Lights title – it also marks the first championship win for his team HMD Motorsports.
“I’ve been with HMD for two years now, and it’s a time I will never forget,” Linus Lundqvist continues. “It’s been such a pleasure from day one and I’m so proud to be a part of this historic moment for the team.”
Lundqvist rounds out the 2022 campaign with 575 points to his tally, 92 clear of second-placed Sting Ray Robb. The 23-year-old celebrated the title with friends and family in the Laguna Seca INDYCAR paddock.
“My family means the world in all of this,” Linus Lundqvist concludes. “I really want to thank them, along with everyone else who’s helped me get to this point. It wouldn’t have been possible without them. Now is the time to celebrate!”
Information regarding Linus Lundqvist’s 2023 racing programme will be communicated in due course.
