22-year-old Lundqvist has agreed a deal that will see the triple single-seater champion, and three-time Indy Lights race winner, remain with reigning teams’ champions HMD Motorsports for another season.
Finishing third in the standings in a successful rookie year in 2021, Lundqvist will be the top returning driver from the previous campaign when America’s leading junior single-seater series gets underway in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the end of the month.
“I’m super happy and very excited to be back for another year in Indy Lights together with HMD,” says Linus Lundqvist. “First off, I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has made this possible – to my sponsors and partners, and everyone who’s been supporting me.
“It’s great to be back with people that I know, and a car that I know. We had a strong season last year, but we want more – we are back to try and win the championship. I am confident that we can do it, and very excited to get going in just a few weeks’ time!”
Rising through the ranks of international motorsport, Lundqvist has achieved a glittering CV, capturing three single-seater titles in three different countries – including the prestigious British Formula 3 championship in 2018. He descended on the USA in 2020, dominating the Formula Regional Americas series with 15 wins from 17 races.
Since 2016, Lundqvist has amassed 41 race wins and 72 podiums, winning at every level he has contested to date. He was an instant success in Indy Lights last year, bookending his rookie campaign with drives to Victory Lane in the first and last race of the season, while taking a further win in a flag-to-flag display at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“Linus brings a great deal of experience and speed to HMD Motorsports in 2022,” says Mike Maurini, General Manager. “Last year, he competed at tracks that he had never seen, but it always seemed that he would find himself close to the front of the field. His rookie season was awarded with three victories and that is pretty impressive in a season that was one of the most competitive in a while, and only saw three different race winners.”
The 2022 Indy Lights calendar takes in 14 races across 11 weekends, all in official support of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Eight rounds are single-race meetings, while three – at Indianapolis, Detroit and Laguna Seca – are double-header events.
The curtain-raiser takes place on the streets of St. Petersburg on February 25-27.
