Lundqvist, who first contested the legendary 24-hour race back in 2019, has signed a deal with Florida-based Alegra Motorsports for the prestigious opening round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, slotting into the team’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.
The Swede will form part of a four-driver line-up that also includes veteran Alegra Motorsports drivers Michael de Quesada (USA) and Daniel Morad (CAN), as well as 2021 DTM champion Maximilian Götz (GER).
“I’m highly excited to be going back to Daytona for a second time, and I really want to thank Alegra Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to race with them,” says Linus Lundqvist. “We have a strong line-up and, even though I’m yet to drive it, I’ve heard many good things about the Mercedes-AMG GT3. I can’t wait to hit the track; there’s no better way to start the year than this!”
The squad will be competing in the hotly contested GTD class for customer racing programmes, in which Alegra Motorsports clinched victory at the Rolex 24 back in 2017.
“2021 was our first year with the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, and we learned a lot,” says team manager Tony Ditto. “It was a tough season with lots of elbows-out racing, and that allowed us to get to know every part of the Mercedes-AMG; I think that will really pay off for us this year. I’m also excited to have Maximilian and Linus joining Daniel and Michael. We’ve got a lot of winning experience in the car this year.”
The 2022 Rolex 24 At Daytona takes place on January 29-30 at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, USA, and marks the 60th anniversary of the world-famous race. Preparations will begin in earnest at the traditional pre-event tests, known as the Roar Before the Rolex 24, on January 21-23.
Single-seater regular Lundqvist, who finished third overall in Indy Lights during a strong rookie campaign last year, will make further announcements concerning his 2022 season shortly.
