- Swede comes out on top of frantic slipstreaming session
- Maiden Euroformula Open pole delivered
Linus Lundqvist executed what he labelled “an almost perfect” run to come out on top of a frantic first Euroformula Open qualifying session at Monza on Saturday morning, sealing his and Double R Racing’s first-ever pole position in the series.
With Monza’s extensive straights making the track notorious for its significant slipstreaming effect, the qualifying tussle came down to a last-gasp fight over track position, with Lundqvist – paying his first visit to the Italian Grand Prix venue – timing his run to perfection to seal pole by 0.039s.
The Swede will thus share the front row of the Race 1 grid with Red Bull-backed Team Motopark racer Liam Lawson, whom Lundqvist is currently battling for Rookie of the Year honours.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be on pole here at Monza,” says Linus Lundqvist. “We have worked so hard for this and to finally bring this back to the team is amazing. I got an almost perfect run with a double tow at the end, and managed to do the job. I’m sure the race will be extremely tough and exciting, but I’m ready to take it on.”
Monza marks the final round of the 2019 Euroformula Open season. Race 1 of the double-header meeting gets underway at 14.15 CEST today. It is scheduled to run for 16 laps and will be streamed LIVE at www.linuslundqvistracing.se/en/live/.
