Linus Lundqvist looking to fly high in Indy Lights finale

Field returns to Mid-Ohio for last round of 2021 campaign
Lundqvist already locked in third in championship standings
Swede aiming to complete strong rookie season in Victory Lane

The 2021 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires campaign is reaching its conclusion. Heading into this weekend’s season showdown at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Linus Lundqvist is already locked into third place in the standings – but it’s the middle step of the podium that hovers in the Swede’s mind going into the finale.

With a run of four consecutive podiums in the last four races, Lundqvist sealed an important career milestone last time out at Laguna Seca, putting third in the overall Indy Lights standings beyond the reach of his rivals to secure himself a coveted NTT INDYCAR SERIES prize test at the end of October.

Already cemented in third, behind remaining title contenders David Malukas and Kyle Kirkwood, Lundqvist can now enjoy a no-strings approach at the Mid-Ohio finale.

“I’ve got nothing to win and nothing to lose in the championship, so I can get in there this weekend and just drive without any pressure,” says Linus Lundqvist. “It’s a pretty comfortable position, although obviously I would have preferred to still be in the title race. That said, I think finishing third in this championship – especially in a rookie year – is something we must be pretty pleased about.”

This weekend’s event will mark the second Indy Lights round at Mid-Ohio this year. The championship paid a previous visit to the Lexington, Ohio, road course for round six back in early July, in what proved a relatively challenging weekend for Lundqvist and his Global Racing Group with HMD Motorsports operation.

“We may not have had the greatest of weekends at Mid-Ohio, but there’s been plenty of water under the bridge since then,” Linus Lundqvist says. “In Portland, for example, which is a similar circuit in character, we were the quickest package on track. It will be interesting to see where we stand this weekend, especially in relation to the July round, but my goal and ambition is to fight for victory in both races and end this season on a high.”

The 2021 Indy Lights finale gets underway with free practice on Friday. Saturday’s agenda takes in the first qualifying session and race of the weekend, mirrored on Sunday with an identical qualifying/race double to wrap up the season.
