Linus Lundqvist capped off an incredible season with a fresh clean-sweep of victories at this weekend’s Formula Regional Americas finale in Austin, Texas…
Lundqvist arrived at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for the final round of the year having already clinched the title at the previous meeting in Miami, but showed no signs of slowing down – instead powering on to yet another dominant display.
Lundqvist’s record-breaking campaign continued when, by topping the times in qualifying, the Swede became the first driver in championship history to head every qualifying session in a single season.
The rest of the weekend continued along the same lines, with Lundqvist netting a perfect score by every metric: taking three lights-to-flag victories, setting the fastest lap in each race, and establishing a new FR Americas track record.
“It’s hard to put into words how good it feels to conclude this incredible season with a new trio of victories,” says Linus Lundqvist. “It’s been just perfect: three wins, three poles, three fastest laps. I want to thank my team, Global Racing Group, for a year that I will never forget. The achievement here at COTA simply demonstrates how we’ve always pushed for more.”
Despite contesting his first season in American racing, and despite having never previously sat foot at any of the tracks on this year’s calendar, Lundqvist has shone throughout in a highly memorable 2020 campaign.
With a whopping 15 wins from 17 races, Lundqvist ties Kyle Kirkwood for the all-time series record of victories in a single season.
The Swede’s sensational resume also includes 15 pole positions, 14 fastest laps, and new track records at five out of six venues visited this year.
With an aggregate score of 401 points, Lundqvist ends the season 118 points clear of runner-up David Malukas (USA).
“I did come here to try and win the title, but I could never have dreamed we’d do it like this,” Linus Lundqvist concludes. “FR Americas has given me a great, great opportunity to further my career, and for that I’m immensely humble. It really is the right time, too, to personally thank my sponsors, partners and the people who make this possible. It would not have happened without you – thanks.”
As part of his prize for winning the Formula Regional Americas title, Linus Lundqvist is awarded a scholarship to race in Indy Lights – the final steeping stone on the road to INDYCAR – next season. Further details relating to the 2021 campaign will be communicated in due course.
