Swede leads “Spring Training” morning session, second fastest in the afternoon
Season-opener just one week away in Alabama
Linus Lundqvist signed a letter of intent ahead of his Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires debut by taking P1 and P2 respectively in Tuesday’s two official pre-season “Spring Training” sessions at Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama (USA).
Taking place in bright and warm conditions, the only collective test ahead of the imminent campaign saw Lundqvist rapidly up to speed in INDYCAR’s main support category.
The reigning Formula Regional Americas champion immediately set the pace in the morning session, leading HMD Motorsports with Global Racing Group team-mate David Malukas (USA) by two tenths of a second.
Lundqvist, with only a handful of days in an Indy Lights car beneath him, simultaneously dipped below the series lap record established in qualifying back in 2015.
In the afternoon, Lundqvist then went second fastest, one tenth down on Malukas in the 13-car field.
On aggregate, Malukas ended the day fastest overall, a mere 0.04s ahead of Lundqvist as the HMD Motorsports with Global Racing Group duo led Andretti Autosport’s Robert Megennis (USA) and Kyle Kirkwood (USA) on the timesheets.
“It’s been a really positive test here at Barber, for the whole team,” says Linus Lundqvist. “Sure, it’s just testing, but all the signs are promising and it’s always nice to see your name at the top of the board. I genuinely feel we have a strong package, both on the longer runs and in qualifying trim. I’m still quite new to the car and still have a bit of learning to do, but I can’t wait to get back here in a week’s time and go racing!“
The Indy Lights grid will return to Barber Motorsports Park next week, April 15-18, for the opening round of the season.
