Linus Lundqvist remains undefeated in the 2020 Formula Regional Americas Championship Powered by Honda after sweeping another weekend of racing in round two of the season at Virginia International Raceway…
Lundqvist produced a remarkable display to win all three races of the weekend on his first-ever visit to the challenging VIR track, backing up his clean-sweep of the season-opening Mid-Ohio double-header to make it an astonishing five wins from five attempts so far.
Making his first strides into American single-seater racing this year after winning the 2018 BRDC British F3 championship, Lundqvist led the way throughout the weekend at VIR: topping Friday’s two practice sessions, setting a new lap record on his way to pole in qualifying, and winning all three races while recording the fastest lap in two of them.
“What an absolute dream weekend – again,” Linus Lundqvist comments. “First of all, I have to thank my team at Global Racing Group. They did a great job all weekend, and it takes a whole lot of work to set up a race-winning car like that. Also massive thanks to Honda. I may be the one driving it, but there is an immense amount of teamwork behind every victory. It’s absolutely stellar and I’m so happy and proud about what we achieved this weekend.”
While Lundqvist controlled the opening two races largely unchallenged at the front, there was no shortage of drama in the concluding race on Sunday afternoon. Australia’s Joshua Car managed to snatch a momentary lead at the start, and while Lundqvist immediately retaliated around the outside of Turn 1, Car kept up the pressure throughout the 35-minute duration.
At the fall of the chequered flag, Lundqvist fended off Car by the tiniest of margins, just 0.256s separating the duo across the line – sealing Lundqvist’s perfect weekend.
“That was definitely one of, if not the, toughest race I have ever done,” Lundqvist wraps up. “Partly because of the pressure from Joshua, but also because of the heat this weekend with temperatures of 100 Fahrenheit. It was extremely hot inside the car, but thankfully I managed to hold on and win. I will remember it for a long time; really close, fair racing.“
Having won all races this season, Lundqvist now leads the Formula Regional Americas standings by 49 points over second-placed David Malukas (USA).
The next round of Formula Regional Americas takes place at Barber Motorsports Park on August 1-2.
