- Championship leader bidding to maintain title advantage
- Season reaches midway point at Silverstone
The BRDC British Formula 3 Championship will reach half time this weekend, with round four out of eight taking place at Silverstone. Linus Lundqvist arrives at the tradition-steeped Grand Prix track leading the standings, and will look to further cement his advantage as racing resumes at the Northamptonshire venue.
Swede Lundqvist has enjoyed an impressive start to his rookie F3 campaign, clinching victories at each of the opening three rounds of the British series to establish a 30-point lead over main title rival Nicolai Kjaergaard (Denmark). Third-placed Kush Maini currently sits another 39 points adrift.
Moving into the midway point of the season, Double R Racing man Lundqvist is keen to not just maintain, but further extend, his championship advantage on the series’ first Silverstone visit of two this year (the finale is staged at the same track in mid-October).
“It will be great coming to Silverstone and we’re clearly enjoying good momentum at the moment, so I’m feeling very optimistic,” says Linus Lundqvist. “This is actually the first time I will race on the full Silverstone GP track – we used the short version last year in Formula 4 – but I’ve driven it in testing and I really enjoy it. It is perfect for Formula 3 with a lot of fast and flowing corners where the aerodynamics come into full effect. I think we’re in for a weekend of some fun racing and my goal is to stand on top of the podium.”
Speaking of fun racing: Silverstone was the scene of one of Lundqvist’s most memorable moments in British Formula 4, from which he subsequently graduated into British F3, last year. In pulling off 22 overtaking moves as he fought his way back following a qualifying crash, Lundqvist demonstrated his race craft skills to set a new series record in positions gained.
Racing this weekend follows the traditional British F3 schedule, with free practice on Friday followed by qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday and the final two races on Sunday.
